The East Asia Institute (President Yul Sohn) held the online seminar “Fighting Anti-Asian Americanism: ROK-U.S. Cooperation for democracy and Human Rights” on July 22, 2021. The seminar is the eighth of the [COVID-19 and the New World Order] online seminar series. The increase of political, cultural, and racial polarization during the COVID-10 pandemic has led to the threat to democracy. The Joint Statement released after the U.S.-Korea Summit in May expressed the leaders’ vision for a region governed by democratic norms, human rights, and the rule of law both at home and abroad” Additionally Biden pledged to work together with Korea to ensure the dignity and rights of all Americans including Korean-Americans. This seminar discusses the background of Anti-Asian Americanism, its effect on the political participation of Korean-Americans, and how ROK-U.S. democratic cooperation should be established.
