The East Asia Institute (EAI) hosted a private online roundtable led by Sook Jong Lee, Senior Fellow and Former President of EAI and Professor at Sungkyunkwan University. The theme of this roundtable was “Geopolitics and Democracy.” The discussion touched upon key topics such as the future of international order and democracy, the inclusion of democratic values in functional cooperation, and ways for Asian democracies to support international democracy.
Approximately 30 Sunnylands Project participants and organizers from the US, Japan, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, and Taiwan participated in the roundtable. This off-the record discussion was one of the roundtable series organized in coordination with the National Endowment for Democracy (NED).

The Sunnylands Principles were introduced in a discussion co-hosted by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the National Endowment for Democracy, and the Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands. The Principles are a vision for regional cooperation to advance democratic governance norms in the Indo-Pacific based on the broad and diverse national experiences each of the signatories represents.
