아시아민주주의연구네트워크(Asia Democracy Research Network: ADRN) 사업의 일환으로 동아시아연구원(East Asia Institute: EAI)은 2018년 11월 22일(목) 한국에서 제8회 워크숍을 개최했습니다. 본 워크숍에서 ADRN 멤버들은 현재 진행하고 있는 “포퓰리즘의 부상과 포퓰리즘 현상이 민주주의에 미치는 영향” 연구과제에 대해 발표를 하고 수정 및 보완 의견을 주고 받았습니다. ADRN 멤버들은 아시아 포퓰리즘이 유럽이나 미국 등 서구 민주주의 국가들이 현재 겪고 있는 포퓰리즘 현상과 어떻게 다른지 규명하고, 아시아 포퓰리즘 현상의 원인과 영향에 공통점이 있음을 살펴봤습니다. 현재 ADRN은 아시아 전역에서 발생하고 있는 포퓰리즘의 양상을 분석하고, 이러한 담론이 민주주의, 시민의 참여 등에 미치는 영향을 살펴보는 연구를 진행하고 있습니다.
ADRN은 2013년 동아시아연구원의 주도 하에 구성된 네트워크로, 아시아 지역에서 민주주의가 당면한 도전과제를 분석하고 보다 실용적인 협동연구를 통해 이 지역의 민주주의 확산과 공고화에 기여하는 것을 목표로 하고 있습니다. 방글라데시, 인도, 인도네시아, 일본, 한국, 말레이시아, 몽골, 미얀마(버마), 파키스탄, 필리핀, 스리랑카, 대만, 태국 등 13개 아시아국가들의 민주주의 관련 싱크탱크들이 참여하고 있으며, 동아시아연구원은 현재 ADRN의 사무국을 맡고 있습니다.

What kinds of strategy or assistance have made populists successful? What are the causes for the rise of populism and how has this affected democracy? In this session, cases of South Korea, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, and Thailand will be presented.
