Introducing the EAI·Genron NPO Joint Press Conference on the results of the 6th Public Opinion Survey on Mutual Perceptions of Korea-Japan Relations

The East Asia Institute (EAI) and the Genron NPO have been conducting an annual public opinion survey on the mutual perceptions of Korea and Japan since 2013. The survey was first conceived with the notion that by gaining an understanding of the mutual perceptions and understanding that citizens of Korea and Japan have of one another, the two countries could get a concrete grasp on the issues that need to be resolved and find the key to building constructive relations for a better future. The 2018 survey was conducted from May to June of this year and surveyed citizens of both countries regarding current political, social, economic, diplomatic, and cultural issues such as the comfort women, historical problems, Dokdo Island, the North Korean nuclear dilemma, security in Northeast Asia, non-governmental exchanges, the Korean Wave, and so on. This survey analyses the 6 years of trend in Korea-Japan Mutual public perception by conducting repeated survey questions as well as the most significant and urgent international issues by conducting new survey questions that includes 2018 international issues. The results of the 2018 survey were presented at this press conference. 

From 22-23 of June, the 6th Korea-Japan Future Dialogue will be held in Seoul, Korea, using the results of this public opinion poll as the basis for discussion. The Korea-Japan Future Dialogue was first held in May of 2013 as a joint venture by EAI and the Genron NPO to establish a channel for civilian dialogue for Korea and Japan, and has become an annual event that offers a venue for politicians, academics, media members, and those in the culture industry to exchange thoughts and ideas. The primary agenda of the 5th Korea-Japan Future Dialogue will be to focus on the results of the public opinion survey and discuss methods for cooperation between the two countries.

 
EAI and the Genron NPO: Leading Think Tanks in Japan and Korea in the Field of Diplomacy and Security

EAI and the Genron NPO are both founding members and leading private think tanks in the field of diplomacy and security that represent Korea and Japan in the Council of Councils (CoC), an initiative organized by the US Council on Foreign Relations (CFR).

*The CoC, an initiative started by the US Council on Foreign Relations, consists of 29 think tanks from 25 countries and was established to discuss global governance and multilateral cooperation issues.
