East Asia Institute and the Chicago Council on Global Affairs (CCGA) jointly held an open seminar on “The Future of North Korea” on October 20th, 2016. Participants discussed the variety of perceptions held by different generations in South Korea regarding the North Korean problem, South Korea’s possible response to threats posed by the North’s conventional forces, the role of THAAD in South Korea’s defense, North Korea’s economic growth amidst stiffening sanctions, and North Korea’s illicit economy.

This seminar was organized with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the purpose of promoting dialogue and the exchange of ideas between the Korean delegation, which consisted of academics and government officials, and influential members of the U.S. public/private sectors, and to strengthen cooperation while promoting a better understanding of think tanks in South Korea and the U.S.
