  • 2017-11-28
On Tuesday, November 28th, Mr. Charles Hay, British Ambassador to the ROK, met with EAI Chairman, Dr. Young Sun Ha, at the East Asia Institute. Mr. Hay and Dr. Ha opened the meeting with a warm confirmation of the strong and ongoing relationship between South Korea and the United Kingdom before segueing into a discussion on the North Korea nuclear issue. Both sides expressed concern regarding the ongoing progression of the North Korean regime’s continued nuclear development. Dr. Ha emphasized that a new roadmap is necessary going forward to resolve the North Korean nuclear crisis. According to Dr. Ha, this roadmap must contain increased pressure and sanctions as well as diverse strategies for engagement. Most importantly, it is essential to discover a way to provide North Korea with a form of security assurance that will enable the regime to make internally-driven changes to their calculus and choose a new Byungjin line of denuclearization and economic development. The meeting concluded with the Ambassador and Dr. Ha agreeing that greater international consultation and cooperation on this issue will be beneficial going forward. Participants
