Wisemen Roundtable - Soft Power in Northeast Asia

  • 2008-02-12

After the public lecture, a smaller group of scholars, policy-makers, and members of the media gathered at the Seoul Plaza hotel on Feb. 12th, 2008 for "The Wisemen Roundtable on Soft Power in Northeast Asia." The Korea Foundation and EAI co-organized this speaker panel with Prof. Nye and invited guests from the U.S., Europe, Japan, Taiwan and Korea all attending. The session was composed of two parts. In the first section, Prof. Jan Melissen (Netherlands Institute of International Relations), Prof. Yul SOHN (Yonsei University), and Prof. Shin-wha LEE (Korea University) gave presentations of their papers prepared for the conference. The second section consisted of an open discussion of the papers and the soft power concept. Hong-koo LEE, the present trustee of EAI and former prime minister, opened the Wisemen Roundtable with his welcoming remarks, and Sook-Jong LEE, the current EAI president, moderated the discussion.

The Korea Foundation and the East Asia Institute, both based in Seoul, held a "Wisemen Panel on Soft Power" after a public lecture by Professor Joseph S. Nye. The panel aims to raise public consciousness on the importance of soft power by inviting a group of "wisemen" to share their wisdom on soft power with the general public. The panel convened on February 12th, 2008 at the Seoul Plaza hotel.
