[2019 ROK-US Think Tank Joint Seminar] Stanford University’s Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center

  • 2019-11-20

EAI with the support of the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), held a joint seminar with Korean and American think tanks on public diplomacy. The aim of this seminar was to establish a foundation for mutual understanding and cooperation at the private level through exchanges and communication between think tanks that produce policy ideas in both Korea and the US. The Korean think tanks took this opportunity to effectively deliver information regarding the basis and ideas driving Korea's foreign policy and to promote understanding through direct discussion between private sector diplomacy and security experts in Korea and the private sector leaders and key experts in the United States. The broader purpose of this project is to enhance understanding of Korea among American leaders and to create the conditions for sustainable relationships based on shared goals and understandings.

On November 20, 2019, EAI co-hosted a public conference with Stanford University’s Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center (APARC) on the topic, . The conference consisted of discussions on US-DPRK relations and debates on ROK's burden sharing costs in regard to the alliance. The conference was attended by students from Stanford University as well as by experts on ROK-US relations including professors and former diplomats. Panelists from EAI and APARC presented on the current diplomatic status of ROK-US relations as well as their future prospects in hopes of raising public awareness of the bilateral alliance and its importance for the regional security architecture amidst continued US-China strategic competition.
