Session Description
On October 24 (Monday), the East Asia Institute (EAI, President Yul Sohn) and MBN co-hosted the at the GLAD Hotel Yeouido. Although ROK-Japan relations have faced their worst situation since the ROK Supreme Court’s verdict on forced labor in 2019 by experiencing three-side conflicts on historic, economic, and security issues such as export restriction, trade conflicts, suspension of the end of GSOMIA, the public opinion in 2022 toward the opposite nation’s favorability, the expectation of improving bilateral relations, and the prospect of ROK-Japan relations is quickly recovering. However, the recent political conflict over the informal ROK-Japan summit in New York, ROK-U.S.-Japan joint military exercises, and historical issues shows that the structured deterioration of relations and the loss of trust between the two governments are still difficult to overcome. Panels provided the solutions to resolve the long-standing deterioration of ROK-Japan relations and discussed in-depth the ideal direction to move forward to a new era.
