On November 14, EAI hosted Robert C. Luskin, an associate professor in the Department of Government at the University of Texas at Austin, for a roundtable discussion on deliberation and deliberative polling. The assembled public opinion experts argued that deliberative polling is a method that helps people to participate more in democratic politics. The small group discussion process that is utilized by deliberative polling requires a skilled moderator who can effectively encourage all participants to speak. The goal is to gather a random, but informed and interested, group of people to discuss a specific political issue with the goal of generating an outcome that can affect actual policy.
