North Korea and Southeast Asia were hot issues in U.S.-China relations in February 2016. While American and Chinese diplomatic efforts to devise a new set of sanctions against North Korea in the wake of its fourth nuclear test paid off, a peace treaty to replace the armistice agreement on the Korean Peninsula and the deployment of THAAD in South Korea became points of contention between the two countries. Furthermore, the summit between the U.S. and leaders from the ASEAN member states highlighted just how far apart the two powers are regarding territorial disputes in the South China Sea. |
