[EAI Issue Briefing]

Security and Society Transformation under the AI Revoluition

and the Future of the Korean Peninsula

Gary Samore (Professor, Brandeis University) discusses the U.S. use of "tailored" and "integrated" deterrence on the Korean Peninsula, predicting that South Korea may develop nuclear weapons if Trump wins the 2024 election and becomes more accepting of North Korea`s nuclear program. Chaesung Chun (Chair of the National Security Research Center, EAI; Professor, Seoul National University) examines AI`s impact on global order and Korean unification, noting South Korea`s innovative AI use versus North Korea`s control-focused approach and questioning whether this tech gap will hinder unification. Ken Gause (Analyst and Senior Advisor, Institute for Defense Analyses) explores the impact of Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) technologies on North Korea, highlighting enhanced regime control via AI and facial recognition but also constraints like limited electricity and import reliance. He concludes that the 4IR won`t spark a revolution in DPRK or ease reunification.

[ADRN Working Paper] Vertical Accountability in Asian Countries: Mongolia, Pakistan, Thailand

As part of the Asia Democracy Research Network (ADRN) research project on vertical accountability, the East Asia Institute (EAI) published three interim reports on the cases of Mongolia, Pakistan, and Thailand. The reports identified the government’s extensive control over citizens’ engagement and electoral management as a significant obstacle to vertical and electoral accountability. They highlighted that this control has led to a greater reliance on informal political participation, such as protests, by citizens.
