[ADRN Twelfth
Workshop] Direct Democracy, Minority Rights, and Transitional Justice
As part of the Asia Democracy Research Network (ADRN) program, the East Asia Institute (EAI) held the 12th Regional Workshop on August 26-27, 2022 in Seoul, Republic of Korea. During the workshop, ADRN members discussed year-long research findings for the 2021-2022 Direct Democracy, Protection of Minority Rights, and Transitional Justice research project. In addition, the workshop included special sessions examining South Korea’s democracy support and good governance cases and exploring the challenges of democracy that Sri Lanka and Pakistan have been facing. On the second day, members discussed next year’s ADRN research theme, democratic accountability. ADRN members from 22 organizations in 14 Asian countries and the members of Asia Democracy Network and the National Endowment for Democracy participated in the event.

Indo-Pacific Strategy and Future Directions of Cooperation between South Korea and

Professor Ramon Pacheco Pardo (King’s College London)
provides insight into the North Atlantic Organization’s (NATO) new Strategic
Concept that defined China as a “systematic challenge.” He predicts that,
despite hoping to maintain a relationship with China, Europe’s longstanding
ties and ideological similarity with the U.S. would cause it to side with the
U.S. in the event of a U.S.-China confrontation. In addition, Professor Pacheco Pardo
highlights that Europe has a special interest in maintaining its longstanding
relationships with Seoul in strengthening its deterrence against the Russian
threat, given that South Korea is the only Asia country exporting
military equipment to NATO members. “ROK-U.S. Cooperation for Restoring Global Democracy” [EAI Roundtable] South Korea’s
