동아시아연구원(East Asia Institute: EAI)은 11월 24일-25일 아시아민주주의네트워크(Asia Democracy Network: ADN)와 공동으로 “Empowering Community of Democracies” 국제회의를 개최했습니다. 외교부의 후원으로 진행된 본 회의에서는 2015년 7월 엘살바도르에서 열릴 제9차 민주주의공동체 각료회의 및 부속 시민사회회의의 의제를 점검하고 민주주의공동체 개혁 및 활성화 방안을 논의했습니다.
회의 첫째 날에는 표현의 자유(Freedom of Opinion and Expression), 민주주의 교육(Education for Democracy), 시민사회 강화(Enabling and Protecting Civil Society), 투명성(transparency), 선거(election) 등의 이슈영역에서 2015년 엘살바도르 민주주의공동체(Community of Democracies) 각료회의에 제안할 의제를 논의하고, 민주주의가 직면하고 있는 한계와 문제점을 해결하기 위한 시민사회단체 역할 강화 방안을 검토했습니다. 회의 둘째 날에는 민주주의 해외지원 재단의 경험과 아시아지역의 적용 가능성 및 민주주의공동체 역량 강화에 대한 개혁 방안을 제안했습니다.
